ACADEMIC GUIDE

STUDENT TENURE

Students admitted for the Diploma in Occupational Therapy programme have a maximum  of Three (3) 
academic sessions. That is four (4) semesters and a session for clinical placement. During this period, students are 
expected to obtain a minimum CGPA of 2.0 required for graduation. Students who fail to meet this minimum 
requirement will not be granted an extension of studentship.

SEMESTERS

The semester system and the course unit system are approved by the Academic board of the School. The 
semester system breaks an academic session into two periods of lectures of 15-17 weeks.   A normal academic 
session usually commences in September/ October and ends in July/August of the following year, giving a total 
semester of 37 weeks. The break down is usually as follows:

I.First Semester

Total number of weeks- 17 weeks

• 2 weeks Registration/Orientation
• Lectures -13 week
• 2 weeks-1stsemester examinations

II.Second Semester

• Total number of weeks-16 weeks
• Registration-1 week
• Lectures-13 weeks
• 2nd semester examinations-2 weeks
  

COURSE UNIT SYSTEM

The Course Unit System (CUS) is a credit system based on the concept that fields of knowledge can be broken 
into small components called courses/modules that can be arranged in some convenient pedagogical (Teaching 
or Lecturing) way.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

I.A Course-  Subject offered for a number of hours

II.Course Unit- 

•  1 course unit= 1 Lecture hour per week
•   2 course unit= 2 Tutorial hours per week
•   3 course unit = 3 Tutorial hours per week

A course carries a minimum of one course unit and a maximum of four/five course units.

The maximum number of course units a student can offer per semester is 24 and the minimum is 16.

III.Core Courses- These are major courses required to be taken and passed by the students majoring in 
Occupational Therapy.

IV.Pre-requisites-  Pre-requisite courses are courses which are essential to the understanding of another higher course 
and which must be passed before the student can take the higher course.

COURSE CODE

The code for each course is made up of three alphabets and three digits, e.g. OPT 101, GNS 101, CSC 102 e.t.c.

The letters represent the name of the programme, whilst the digits (depending on whether 1st, 2nd, 3rd) represent 
level of the programme and also whether 1st or 2nd semester course.

• OPT -  Occupational Therapy
• GNS -  Use of English
• SHE -  Health Education and Recreational 

  Activities.

· The first digit represents the level of the programme.

· The final digit

If odd represents 1st semester courses

If even represents 2nd semester courses

Therefore;

• OPT 101 represents a 1st semester course for Year 1 in Occupational Therapy.
• OPT 201 represents 1st semester course for Year 2 in Occupational Therapy.
• OPT 102 represents2nd semester course for Year 1 in Occupational Therapy

COURSE STRUCTURE PARAMETERS WEIGHT

The assessment of students either for promotion or award of Diploma is based on a number of parameters and definite 
weight, as laid down by the Academic and Technical Committee of the School.  The parameters and the corresponding 
weighing are as follows:-

Project:  Project work, where required, is treated as a course on its own which must be satisfied before the award 
of a Diploma.

COURSE WORK

Clinical Placement

1. Practical placements are integral component of the total curriculum that enables the students to develop, demonstrate
   and achieve competence to practice as an Occupational Therapy Assistance.  It is therefore undertaken as a requirement of the educational programme leading 
   to a qualification to practice.
2. The purpose is for students to integrate knowledge, clinical reasoning, ethical conduct for practice and 
   to develop skills and attitudes to a new graduate level.
3. It is necessary for students to gain supervised experience of working with service users and carers of different ages who
   experience different problems and whose care is managed in different service contexts. By having different experience in 
   different specializations, students gain a balance of experience across occupational therapy practice areas.

GRADING 

Grading is done using the 4-points grading system and students performance in any semester is recorded as the Grade Point 
Average (GPA) which is a function of the Course Units and the weighted Grade Point (WGP). The table below gives the letter grades in use and their corresponding percentage scores and Weighted Grades.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)

A student’s GPA in any semester is obtained by dividing his WGP by the total of the Course Units of the course taken.

CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE

This is the weighted average of the GPA of all the semester.

ABSENTEEISM GRADE

If a student absents himself from examination, where the student has not officially withdrawn from the course, a score of ZERO 
will be entered for the student in that course.

CLASSIFICATION OF DIPLOMA

Diplomas are classified from distinction to ordinary pass according to the CGPA.

Thus the table below illustrates:

ACADEMIC STANDING 

The following terms are used in determining a student’s academic standing at various stages of his course:

1. Probation:  A student is put under probation, if at the end of the second semester, his GPA falls below 2.00 provided his 
   CGPA is not less than 1.50.
2. Warning:  If a student obtains a GPA less than 2.00 at the end of the 1st semester, such a student would be issued with 
   a LETTER OF WARNING.
3. Carry-over:  Under the course unit system, there is no Resit of examinations or Repeat of class.  In place of this, is a carry-
   over system (CO). All failed courses (i.e. grades E, F, G & H) are treated as carryover provided the condition under probation is 
   satisfied. All such carry-over courses must be taken at the appropriate semester, i.e. when such courses are available.
4. Withdrawal:  At the end of second semester, a student with a cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of below 1.50 will
    be asked to withdraw from the school.  “Withdrawal does not apply after the first semester examinations”.

CRITERIA FOR GRADUATION AND AWARD OF DIPLOMA CERTIFICATES

A student’s programme is deemed to have been successfully completed, if the following conditions have been met:

1.CGPA is not less than 2.00

2.Project Work has been successfully completed

3.Must have had a class attendance not less than 75%

4.Satisfactory completion of Clinical Placement

5.All prescribed core courses are passed. 

6.Must possess satisfactory conduct

Candidates will be entitled to the School’s Diploma Certificate if in addition to meeting the above requirements, he/she has not 
been found wanting in character.
